top honor for April

University of Hawaii at Hilo softball player Aisha Sueda has been named the Big Island Athlete of the Month for April.

The senior second baseman out of Hilo High School led the Vulcans with a .382 batting average, 35 runs batted in and six home runs. At the plate, she scored 22 runs to go along with five doubles and a triple. In the field, she had 106 putouts, 95 assists and eight errors for a steady .962 fielding percentage.

Sueda was named to the All-Pacific West Conference first team this season. She was the only Vulcan to earn the league honor this season.

UHH finished the season with a 24-20 overall record and 18-13 in the PacWest standing, in fifth place.

The Big Island athlete of the month program is sponsored by Don’s Grill, under owner Don Hoota. The athlete of the month as well as athlete and sportsperson of the year programs were founded by the late Jack Matsui.

Members of the selection committee are Hugh Clark, Ramon Goya, Stan Costales and chairman Bill O’Rear.

• March: Kamehameha’s Akoakoa Paleka-Kennedy captured his second straight state heavyweight wrestling title.

KTA awards seven

seniors with stipends

KTA Super Stores is holding its 24th annual Tony Taniguchi Senior Championship on Saturday at Hilo Municipal Golf Course players 55 years and older

The proceeds of the tournament help fund $500 scholarships to high school seniors who are members of the Big Island Junior Golf Association.

This year’s scholarship winners are Alison Tengan, Chad Suzuki, Richard Chun, Nani Yanagi, and Megan Kimura of Waiakea; Tiara Inoue of St. Joseph; and Kamehameha’s Kiana Lumanlan.

Waiakea High awards

night set for Monday

The Waiakea High School will hold its athletic awards night on Monday at the school cafeteria.

Dinner will be served from 5:30-6:15 p.m. The athletic awards ceremony will start at 6:30 p.m.

A chili dog plate with mac salad and brownie will be sold for $5 to the first 150 people.

Vulcans conducting

July soccer camps

The University of Hawaii at Hilo will hold three soccer camps in July, under the direction of Ziggy Korytoski.

A residential camp will be held July 19-22 for players ages 14-18 years old.

According to a release, the camp provides “an opportunity to develop technical and tactical abilities … and curriculum includes a combination of 11-on-11 and small-sided games along with daily sessions that focus on individual player development and group tactics.”

The residential cost is $495, while the commuter cost is $430.

There will also be day camps from July 23-27 divided into two sections:

—The Vulcans (ages 8-14). Curriculum includes dribbling/ball control, passing/possession, group play/spacial awareness, defending and finishing. The sessions run from 9 a.m.–noon at a cost of $135.

—The Junior Vulcans (ages 4-7). Program includes “fun games that will introduce and emphasize all aspects of the sport.” Running from 9:30-11 a.m., the cost is $85.

Korytoski is the former director of Antigua GFC, which won the 2010-11 Guatemala Segunda Division Championship.
